Americo's
Story

Born in the United States of America, to immigrant parents and raised in the Hill Neighborhood of New Haven, Americo R. Carchia developed a passion for the law at an early age.  His work at his parents’ corner store included translating for the non-English speaking customers and becoming an important part of the neighborhood.  It was a part of what motivated him to a career in the legal profession and more importantly to advocate for people’s rights.

Americo attended St. Peter’s grammar school in New Haven and then later Notre Dame HS in West Haven.  He received a BA and a Master’s in Administration of Justice from Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island.  Americo later received his Law Degree from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School (now Western Michigan University).

Following law school, Americo returned to his New Haven roots to work as a Superior Court Clerk and fulfilling his lifelong dream of becoming an Attorney in New Haven. He opened his General Law Practice in New Haven with a concentration in Probate Law, Mental Health Law, Conservatorship and Elder Law working closely with the Probate Courts.  It resulted in his forming a long-lasting relationship with the former Probate Judge Jack Keyes and other Probate Judges throughout the state.

Americo has worked for over twenty-eight years on a wide variety of Probate Court matters including Wills, Estates and Trusts to Conservatorships, Guardian Ad Litem, Guardianships for Children and Intellectually Disabled, and as an Attorney for Indigent Clients. Americo has worked as a pro bono Attorney with Statewide Legal Services for all his career.  Americo has always been committed to explaining the complexities of the Probate Court in a way that every client can understand.  Those who know him will tell you that above all else, he is kind, courteous, patient and empathetic with everyone who he comes into contact with whether they be the chronically ill or mentally challenged persons, concerned or upset parents, minor children, family members who have lost loved ones and have come to require the services of the Probate Court.

He is a licensed to practice law both in Connecticut and in New Jersey. Americo has extensive legal experience with and appearances before both the Connecticut Juvenile Court and Superior Court, as well as before Federal Court. He has been a member of American Bar Associations, the Connecticut Bar Association, Elder Law Section, the National Academy of Elderly Law Attorneys, Inc, and the New Haven County Bar Association.  He is the recipient of numerous judicial awards including the American Jurisprudence Award in Contracts and in Property at Thomas Cooley Law School. He was the Recipient of the Loyal, Distinguished and Outstanding Service Award, presented by the New Haven Probate Court under Judge Jack Keyes in 2004. He was invited by the Probate Court and Casey Family Services to serve on a panel that evaluated Connecticut’s Probate Court system’s handling of children’s matters and the issues of the families involved. His efforts, along with other panel members, directly contributed to the creation of the Regional Children’s Probate Court in 2004.

Fluent in Italian, Americo resides in New Haven and works with his eldest son, Ettore F. Carchia, who is an Attorney in their law practice. Americo's second child is also an attorney who was practicing law in New York State. Americo’s three other children are all still attending college and working.

Americo has spent nearly three decades working in a variety of roles with the New Haven Probate Court. Americo pledges to continue to serve the people of New Haven with dedication, compassion, purpose, and fairness if elected Probate Judge.  He has a deep understanding of the law and the community. He is compassionate and thoughtful and recognizes how important it is for a judge to render a fair, compassionate, and thoughtful decision for every child, woman, man, or family that appears before the Judge.
